mewithoutyou - Catch For Us
the Foxes
By Michelle
2005
I
had already decided to give mewithoutyou a couple of stars for the
moderately obscure Scripture reference, but then, after checking out
their website and noting their excitement over their new "Grease-Fuelled
Vehicle," well.....I knew this was going to be interesting. Highly
outspoken and fan-friendly, they defy personal labels; and the genre
labels ascribed to them on their
purevolume.com page as "indie/post hardcore/rock", hardly do justice
to this unique and powerful CD.
Usually one
associates hardcore with a sort of guttural, incomprehensible growl, but
these songs alternate between spoken word and a distinct "holler," as
though he were serenading you from the end of your block. Song number
one-"Torches Together"-launches with hard rock fury, and from there
begins the narrative. I say narrative, because these are not randomly
strung together songs, they form a train of thought that begins with the
spiritual illnesses afflicting all of us-isolation, distraction,
disappointment, hypocrisy. From there, each song initially transitions
breathlessly into the one that follows it. The soul seeks rest, however,
as described in "Four Word Letter (Pt. Two): "We hunger, but though all
that we eat brings us little relief we don't know quite what else to do,
we have all our beliefs, but we don't want our beliefs, God of Peace, we
want you," and the song pace slows, as the answers to our afflictions
are found in Him.
Powerful, skillful
musicianship frames original, thought-provoking lyrics. I give it five
stars. Check them out on their various websites:
